Q. Is there any associated risk with pet foods that do use Offal or discarded parts of the animal in the
manufacture of Meat-Meal or other Meal products? A. We know that the BSE agent or Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy
is not destroyed through cooking or the rendering process, even at the
highest temperatures presently used in any rendering facility. The BSE prion is highly resistant to
Heat, Ultraviolet Light, Ionizing Radiation and common Disinfectants used to
inactivate viruses and bacteria. If the consumer is worried about the
potential of BSE contaminated products infecting dogs, then the pet owner
might consider avoiding the use
of any bagged, canned, or fresh frozen products, that contain any By-Products, or Meat-Meal, (FarMore uses no
By-Products or Meals, and our selected bones, are ground fresh). Q. How about cross contamination? Is it possible for the
BSE agent to affect otherwise clean meats? A. It is possible in a non-certified facility, but the
recent measures taken by both the Canadian and U.S. governments, ensure that
CFIA or USDA certified processing plants, have a minimal risk of cross
contamination. I would welcome any further
inquiries related to this issue to my e-mail address. president@farmoredogfood.com Sincerely, Richard A. McCulloch |
